How to hang a wallpaper mural yourself - step by step. Installing a wallpaper mural is easier than it seems. All you need is a little patience and careful wall preparation. Below you will find everything you need to know to complete the installation on your own.

What you will need

  • wallpaper mural (check that all strips/panels have the same batch number)
  • wallpaper adhesive (suitable for the type of mural - usually stated on the product label)
  • bucket and mixing tool for preparing the adhesive
  • wide brush or roller for applying the adhesive
  • smoothing tool or wallpaper roller for smoothing
  • clean, dry sponge or cloth
  • spirit level (ideally with a laser plumb line)
  • pencil
  • wallpaper knife or sharp utility knife with a metal ruler
  • masking tape (optional, to protect adjacent surfaces)

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Gluing onto a damp or unprepared wall
  • A layer of adhesive that is too thick or uneven
  • No vertical line marked - the mural drifts sideways
  • Drying too quickly (e.g. with an open window or near a radiator)
  • Trimming when the mural has already become stiff and dry

Installation Process

Follow these meticulous instructions step-by-step to ensure a flawless and secure installation.

Preparing the wall

1. The wall must be clean, dry, smooth and even. 2. Remove old wallpaper, flaking paint and any unevenness. 3. Fill in cracks and holes with filler, and once dry, sand them down. 4. If the wall is absorbent (e.g. raw plaster), prime it - this improves adhesive grip. 5. Wait until the wall is completely dry before starting the installation.

Marking the vertical line

1. Using a spirit level, draw a vertical pencil line at the point where you will start hanging the first strip. 2. This step is very important - it ensures the mural will be perfectly straight, even if the wall or ceiling is not.

Preparing the adhesive

1. Mix the adhesive according to the instructions on the packaging (usually powder + water). 2. Wait for the time recommended by the manufacturer (usually a few minutes) until the adhesive matures and has a uniform consistency.

Applying the adhesive

- Mural glued onto the wall: apply the adhesive directly to the wall, slightly wider than the first strip. - Mural glued onto the back of the panel: apply the adhesive evenly to the back of the panel, right up to the edges. Apply the adhesive in a thin, even layer - ideally with a brush or roller, working from the centre of the panel outwards.

Hanging the first strip

1. Align the first strip with the marked vertical line, starting from the top. 2. Gently press the mural from the centre outwards using a smoothing tool or roller, removing any air bubbles as you go. 3. Immediately wipe off any excess adhesive that appears at the edges with a damp sponge. 4. Check that the strip is perfectly straight (a spirit level will help here).

Hanging the next strips

1. Align the next strip edge to edge with the previous one, paying attention to the continuity of the pattern. 2. Press from the centre outwards, just as before. 3. Repeat until the whole surface is covered.

Trimming the excess

1. Trim the excess mural at the ceiling, floor, doors or windows using a wallpaper knife guided along a metal ruler. 2. Cut gently, ideally while the mural is still slightly damp - this makes for a cleaner, straighter cut.

Finishing

1. Gently wipe the whole surface once more with a clean, damp sponge to remove any remaining adhesive. 2. Leave the mural to dry - avoid draughts, open windows and direct sunlight for approximately 24-48 hours.
